Kalamazoo residents are encouraged to commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by taking part in the annual Community-Wide Day of Service on Monday, January 20. The Community-Wide Day of Service invites residents to put the teaching and philosophy of Dr. King into action, taking time to volunteer for causes that will make our community stronger and make our city a better place.
Community members are invited to participate in any type of community service, for any cause or organization that is important to them. Gryphon Place will help coordinate volunteers and volunteer opportunities. Community members who are interested in volunteering can register at go.gryphon.org. Gryphon Place may also be reached by phone at (269) 381-1510 ext. 242.
Mayor David Anderson will welcome volunteers with light breakfast at Mayors’ Riverfront Park from 8:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. in the Community Room of the Parks and Recreation building before community service begins. Starting at 3:45 p.m., community members will meet at the Metro Transit Building (530 N Rose St) for a commemorative walk to Martin Luther King, Jr. Park (507 N Rose St) for a wreath-laying ceremony, which is expected to begin around 4:15 p.m. The ceremony will feature several community leaders speaking on the life, legacy, and impact of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The City of Kalamazoo also recognizes youth that are living the values of Dr. King through service and leadership. Social Justice Youth Awards are presented by the City Commission at its meeting on January 27. Learn more about the awards here.
