Public Events

  • What is the application deadline?

    Requests should be submitted at least 60 days in advance of your event, but please understand that this minimum amount of time for processing will result in you receiving notice of approval only one or two weeks prior to the event. Starting in June 2017, to avoid any late fees all public events must be submitted 120 days before the event. If submitted between 60 and 120 days in advance, there is a $50 late fee that is applied. Events will not be accepted with less than 60 days until the event.
  • What is the application process like?

    Applications must be submitted 120 days in advance, we will inform you of its acceptance at least 60 days in advance.
  • Do I need insurance?

    To use City Property, you must list the City of Kalamazoo as an additionally insured for the amount of $1,000,000.
  • What will the cost for my public event be?

    Each event varies greatly in cost depending on its unique needs. Generally, to rent a park costs $300-$600. To close a single road costs approximately $500, and to host a 5k in the roads costs $2000-$5000.
  • When will I have to pay my bill from my public event?

    You will receive a single invoice from the City of Kalamazoo after your event that includes the any applicable costs, including Public Services cost, Parks rental, and Public Safety cost within 60 days of your event.

Park specific questions

  • Can I have alcohol?

    Not for private events, for public events only if an alcohol application is received at least 30 days in advance of your event.
  • Can I set up a tent?

    Yes; however, there is no staking in most parks. If it is larger than a 10x10, it will need a tent permit application and additional fees apply.
  • Can I have a bouncer?

    Not for private events, for public events only if the City of Kalamazoo is listed as an additionally insured for the event.
  • Can I have a Slip and Slide?

    Not under any circumstances can a slip and slide be used in the park.
  • What are the food rules?

    Pre-packaged food is permitted. To prepare food on site one must contact the Kalamazoo County Health Department at (269) 373-5200 and fill out this form
  • Can I have glass?

    Glass containers are not allowed in the park.
  • When do the parks open and close?

    From the first week in May to the last week of October, Park entrances will be unlocked at 8 am and closed by dusk. If special accommodations need to be made for your event, please contact the Parks and Recreation office at 337-8191 for more information.
  • Will there be bathrooms at my event?

    Bathrooms will be unlocked at 8 am and closed by dusk from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Spring Valley Park, Mayors’ Riverfront Park, Woods Lake, Versluis/Dickinson, Upjohn Park, and Milham Park are the parks in the City of Kalamazoo with bathrooms. If special accommodations need to be made for your event, please contact the Parks and Recreation office at 337-8191 for more information.
  • Can I charge admission?

    It is not permitted to charge entrance into a City park; however you are able to charge specifically for your event.
  • Do I need security?

    Security is not provided at your event, and the City of Kalamazoo will not be held responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged items.
  • What is the capacity of each park?

  • What is the parking like at the park?

  • Is there water/electricity hookup?

Private party questions

  • How can I rent a park pavilion or shelter for my private party?

    You can rent a shelter by calling the Parks and Recreation office at 337-8191. They vary in price from $60-$120 and can be rented in a four hour block (10AM-2PM or 3-7PM). Payment is due at the time of the reservation for pavilions.
  • When do I need to rent a shelter?

    Shelters need to be rented with more than 10 days’ notice or there will be an additional $15 late fee applied.
  • How can I rent an entire park for my private party?

    You can rent an entire park by calling the Parks and Recreation office at 337-8191. They vary in price from $270-$600 and are an all-day rental. Payment is due at the time of the reservation for park.
  • How old do I need to be to rent a park?

    You must be 18 to rent a park, pavilion, or shelter.
  • Do I have to rent the park, or can I show up?

    You do not need to rest a park or a shelter, but those renting do get priority. Those renting a shelter also have access to Park amenities, non-renters do not always have access to electricity, water, bathrooms, etc.
  • Can I rent additional picnic tables?

    All parks have picnic tables, but the amount and configuration vary based on location. The Parks department will not move picnic tables from park to park, and they will not arrange the configuration within the park to accommodate your event. If the tables are not secured to the ground, your group is able to move the tables around within the park.
  • Can I have a bonfire?

    Per City of Kalamazoo Parks Rules and Regulations, no person shall build or maintain a fire in a park.
  • Can I bring my own grill?

    Several parks do have grills present; however, you may bring your own grill as long as you have checked with the Parks department at 337-8191.
